The Thunderbirds opened the renovated Merritt College Gymnasium and Bay Valley Conference season on a sour note as the Thunderbirds were upset by Mendocino College. The game was a offensive shootout, with both teams lacking solid defense. However on this night it left the Thunderbirds on the short end of the stick Mendocino 95 Thunderbirds 86. The Thunderbirds Conference record stands at 0-1 with a overall record of 11-6....
William Tolefree led the Thunderbirds in scoring and rebounding with 22 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.
Saajid Polite had a hot 1st half but cooled downed in the 2nd half (cramping) finishing with 15 points, 8 assists and 5 rebounds.
Joshua Hatcher had 14 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists.
Tyler Idowu had 12 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks.
Elliott Herald had 10 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
For the Thunderbirds to have a opportunity to win the Bay Valley Conference they must defend, rebound and shoot free throws consistently. When they accomplish these goals they will be a top of the Bay Valley Conference. Merritt College appreciates all who came last night to support Merritt College Athletics. The Thunderbirds next home game is next Wednesday January 12, 2011 vs the Solano College Falcons. The women play at 5:30pm and the Men play at 7:30pm. The Thunderbirds have a quick day turnaround and play the Los Medanos College Mustangs at Los Medanos College this Friday January 7, 2011 at 7:30pm.
