THE THUNDERBIRDS ARE EXCITED AND PREPARE TO START THE 2013 BAY VALLEY CONFERENCE SEASON


THE THUNDERBIRDS ARE PREPARING FOR BAY VALLEY CONFERENCE PLAY. THE THUNDERBIRDS OPEN UP WITH THERE CROSS TOWN RIVAL THE ALAMEDA COLLEGE COUGARS. THE THUNDERBIRDS LOOK FORWARD TO SOME HOME COOKING FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS SEASON. THE THUNDERBIRDS HOST ALAMEDA COLLEGE IN THERE HOME OPENER WEDNESDAY JAN 4, 2013 AT 7PM AT THE THUNDER DOME. THEN FRIDAY  JAN 5, 2013 AT 7PM THE THUNDERBIRDS HOST THE NAPA VALLEY COLLEGE STORM.

THUNDERBIRDS ARE HUNGRY FOR A WIN AS THEY PREPARE FOR THE FINAL PRESEASON TOURNAMENT AT SAN JOSE CITY COLLEGE


The Thunderbird's have had a tough pre-season schedule and look to complete there preseason on a winning note at the San Jose City College Tournament December 6-8. The Thunderbirds will be back in action Thursday December 6 at 8pm as they take on the 20th in the state and 10th in the north ranked Ohlone College Renegades. Please come and support your Thunderbirds.

THE THUNDERBIRDS HEAD TO THE SHASTA COLLEGE TOURNAMENT NOV 16-18


The Thunderbirds head to the Shasta College Tournament in Redding, California Friday November 16, 2012. The Thunderbirds take on the10th in the state 6th in the north ranked Cabrillo College Seahawks at 2pm.

THE THUNDERBIRDS COMPLETE THE SAN JOSE CITY COLLEGE TIP OFF TOURNAMENT 1-2


The Thunderbirds have completed there first 3 games at the San Jose City College Tip Off Tournament. The Thunderbirds won there opener against the Foothill College Owls ranked #3 in the north and 6th in the state by the score of THUNDERBIRDS 79 Foothill 62.

 In round 2 the Thunderbirds took on the host San Jose City College Jaguars and in a ugly game and a horrible free throw shooting performance of 22/40 from ft line the Thunderbirds came up short by 5 points. San Jose 64 THUNDERBIRDS 59.

In round 3 the consolation championship the Thunderbirds took on the Lassen College and came up 3 points short in overtime final score Lassen 90 THUNDERBIRDS 87.

What can be taken from the past 3 games is that the THUNDERBIRDS are extremely talented but are in the process of developing team cohesion. Increased focused on free throw shooting, boxing out and overall team shot selection discipline throughout each game will produce the success the THUNDERBIRDS are looking for in the near future.

THE THUNDERBIRDS OPEN THE 2012-2013 SEASON AGAINST THE FOOTHILL COLLEGE OWLS AT THE SAN JOSE CITY COLLEGE TIP OFF TOURNAMENT FRIDAY NOVEMBER 9 AT 8PM

The Thunderbirds are excited to get the 2012-2013 Men's Basketball season underway. Please come and support the Thunderbirds Friday November 9th at 8pm at the San Jose City College Tip Off Tournament in San Jose, California.The Thunderbirds take on the Foothill College Owls in the 1st round contest. THE THUNDERBIRDS FINISH THE SEASON 15-14 OVERALL 7-5 IN BAY VALLEY CONFERENCE PLAY

The Thunderbirds complete the 2011-2012 Mens Basketball Season 15-14 overall and 7-5 in Bay Valley Conference play. On Valentines Day Feburary 14, 2012. In the first round of the Bay Valley Conference playoffs the Thunderbirds took on the Marin College Mariners at the Thunderdome. The Thunderbirds defeated the Mariners by the score of Mariners 63 Thunderbirds 79.


The Thuderbirds were led by:

Tyler Idowu had 19 points and 11 rebounds

Nick Capiti had 16 points and 10 rebounds

Eric Nelson had 13 points and 16 rebounds

Joshua Amey had 14 points and 6 assists.

In the conference semi finals playoff matchup Feburary 15, 2012 the Thunderbirds took on the Yuba College 49ers. The Thunderbirds were defeated completing there season.

THE THUNDERBIRDS CRUISE TO VICTORY IN SOPHOMORE NIGHT VS THE CROSSTOWN RIVAL ALAMEDA COLLEGE COUGARS 95-80

The Thunderbirds came out strong in sophomore night up 14 at halftime by the score of 53-39. The Cougars were able to chip the lead down to 6 but again the Thunderbirds turned up there intensity and cruised to a 95-80 victory over the Alameda College Cougars.The Thunderbirds maintained there intensity throughout the entire game and passed the ball extremely well, as 7 Thunderbirds ended in double figures. The Thunderbirds finish Bay Valley Conference play 7-5 and Overall 14-13.

The Thunderbirds went to Kentfield to take on the Marin College Mariners and were defeated 71-67. The Thunderbirds will be protesting this contest due to poor officiating.

THE THUNDERBIRDS ARE DEFEATED AT CONTRA COSTA COLLEGE

The Thunderbirds and the Contra Costa Comets faced off Monday January 30, 2012 at Contra Costa College. The Thunderbirds played extremely fatigued as they had played 4 games in 7 days. The Thunderbirds were defeated by the score Thunderbirds 53 Comets 67.

Jordan Fuselier had 16 points and 8 rebounds

Tyler Idowu had 13 points and 10 rebounds

The Thunderbirds played a poor first half and were down by 24 points by the score of 54-30. In the 2nd half the Thunderbirds were able to tie Yuba 39-39. The Thunderbirds left 3pt shooters open the entire night and shot 16-33 from the free throwline. Final score Yuba 93 Thunderbirds 69.

THE THUNDERBIRDS WEATHER THE STORM 92-69

Wednesday night at the Thunderdome the Thunderbirds defeated the Napa Valley Storm 92-69. The Thunderbirds went into halftime up 10 41-31 and in the second half more of the same as the Thunderbirds out scored the Storm 51-38. The Thunderbirds are 6-2 in Bay valley Conference play and 13-10 overall.

THE THUNDERBIRDS TOOK ON THE MENDOCINO COLLEGE EAGLES AND CAME UP SHORT IN OVERTIME 73-71

The Thunderbirds played a nail bitter against the Mendocino College Eagles and lost 73-71 in overtime. The Thunderbirds shot poorly from the free throw line and forced some shots from the field.

Jordan Fusslier had 18 points 6 rebounds 5 assists

Nick Capiti had 12 points and 8 rebounds

On a stormy Friday night the Thunderbirds went to play there rival the Alameda college cougars and defeated them by the score of 73-64. The Thunderbirds controlled the game in both halves by playing solid defense, controlling the boards and getting to the free throw line 45 times. The Thunderbirds were up by 21 but Alameda was able to chip the lead down too 9.

IN A RIVALRY SHOWDOWN THE THUNDERBIRDS DEFEAT IN A ROUT 74- 50 THE #9 RANKED CONTRA COSTA COLLEGE COMETS

The Thunderbirds picked the right time to start playing closer to there full potential as the defeated there rival Contra Costa College by the score of Thunderbirds 74 Contra Costa 50. The Thunderbirds led at halftime by 6 26-20. In the 2nd half it was more focus and aggressive physical play as the Thunderbirds out scored the Contra Costa in the 2nd Half 48 -30. In all 3 phases the Thunderbirds played well. They shot 92% from the free throw line, controlled the offensive and defensive glass, and allowed only 50 points.

Tyler Idowu 16 points 13 rebounds

Nick Capiti 15 points 8 rebounds

Kareem Ransom 13 points 5 rebounds

Eric Nelson 10 points 11 rebounds

Next is a trip across the city and through the tunnel to Alameda to face another rival the Alameda College Cougars. The game takes place this Friday January 20, 2012, the women play the Laney College Eagles at 5:30pm and the Men play at Alameda College at 7:30pm.

THE THUNDERBIRDS DEFEAT THE MARIN COLLEGE MARINERS IN OVERTIME 76-69

The Thunderbirds give up a 13 point lead with 4:30 minutes left in the 2nd half and find themselves in overtime. In the overtime period the Thunderbirds played steady and beat the Marin college Mariners 76-69. Throughout the contest the Thunderbirds were solid on defense and rebounding but the contest wouldn't have been close if the Thunderbirds didn't miss 10 freethrows. The Thunderbirds freethrows need to Improve immediately as the continue through Bay Valley Conference play.

THE THUNDERBIRDS DEFEAT THE SOLANO COLLEGE FALCONS 71-56 TO MOVE TO 2-1 IN CONFERENCE PLAY

In a slow start to the contest the Thunderbirds led the Solano College Falcons at halftime 37-28. Better defense and more aggressiveness toward the basket allowed the Thunderbirds to defeat the Solano College Falcons with the final score of Thunderbirds 71- Falcons 56. The Thunderbirds need to be more consistent at the free throw line on the road as the Thunderbirds shot a anemic 10 for 24. The Thunderbirds stand at 2-1 in Bay Valley Conference play with a match up against the Marin College Mariners this Friday January 13, 2012. The women play at 5:30pm and the men at 7:30pm.Please come and support the Merritt College Thunderbirds!

IN THE HOME OPENER THE THUNDERBIRDS COME BACK AND DEFEAT THE LOS MEDANOS MUSTANGS 70-63

After 16 road games in the home opener the Thunderbirds played a lethargic first half and found themselves down 6 by the score of 27-33. In the 2nd half the Thunderbirds played more inspired and out scored the Los Medanos college Mustangs 43-27 winning the game by the final score of Thunderbirds 70 Mustangs 63.

The Thunderbirds were led by:

Kareem Ransom had a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds.

Jordan Fuselier had 15 points 6 rebounds and 5 assists.

Nick Dixon had his first double figure game and double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Tyler Idowu had 10 points and 7 rebounds.


The Thunderbirds head back on the road to Fairfield, Ca on Wednesday January 11, 2012 to take on the Solano College Falcons. The Women play at 5:30pm the Men play at 7:30pm.

THE THUNDERBIRDS TAKE ON THE LOS MEDANOS COLLEGE MUSTANGS IN THERE HOME OPENER TONIGHT!

The Thunderbirds play in front of the home crowd for the first time this season as they take on the Los Medanos college Mustangs in Bay Valley Conference play. The Thunderbirds have played 16 straight road games and look forward to some home cooking. After a disapointing effort in the league opener the Thunderbirds look to get back on the wining track. The women play at 5:30pm and the mens game is at 7:30pm. Please come and support Merritt College Athletics!

THE THUNDERBIRDS FALL IN THE LEAGUE OPENER IN UKIAH 81-69

In the first half the Thunderbirds maintained some focus, poise and pride. However it was short lived as the Thunderbirds gave up a 12 point lead to the Mendocino Eagles who play well at home as they went in to halftime down 35-31. In the second half the Thunderbirds were out of sync emotionally and lacked focused turning over the basketball 18 times and fell to the Mendocino College Eagles 81-69.


Nick Capiti led all scores with 23 points and 8 rebounds

Tyler Idowu had a double double of 16 points and 15 rebounds

Jordan Fusslier had 15 points and 4 rebounds and 3 steals

Kareem Ransom chipped in 8 points

BAY VALLEY CONFERENCE PLAY STARTS TONIGHT FOR THE THUNDERBIRDS!

Happy New Year everyone! Before the close of the 2011 year the Merritt College Thunderbirds played at the Chabot College Classic December 28-30 at Chabot College in Hayward. After a lack luster effort and defeat in the first round vs the home team Chabot College, the Thunderbirds faced two Bay Valley Conference foes in the Los Medanos College Mustangs and cross town rival Alameda College Cougars. The Thunderbirds defeated the Los Medanos College Mustangs 58-50 in the second round and then in the consolation championship down 15 came back on a 19-0 run and defeated the Alameda College Couguars 70-66. The Thunderbirds finished 2011 winning 2 out of there last 3 games and finishing preseason 7-8.

Bay Valley Conference play begins tonight and the Thunderbirds have there hands full as the Thunderbirds head to Ukiah, California to take on the Mendocino College Eagles. Mendocino is a high scoring team who plays well at home. The Thunderbirds will be successful if they stay mentally focused for 40 minutes playing stingy defense and executing on the offensive end. Game time is 5:30pm for the womens game and 7:30pm for the mens game.There will be post game updates Thursday January 5, 2012.
